Comparison of Antimicrobial Resistance in Global Wastewater Treatment Plant Influent and Effluent Through Culture-Independent Metagenomic Analysis

  27 August 2024

This study compares the impact of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on microbial diversity and distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARBs) globally. Results show a similar distribution and frequency of resistant pathogens and ARGs in global influent and effluent, with high frequencies of ARGs conferring resistance to clinically crucial drug classes.
